Counselors Not Cops
Providence Student Union (PSU) and the Providence Alliance for Safer Schools (PASS) Coalition are partnering with CYCLE to develop a research report in support of the Counselors Not Cops campaign. This 9-month mixed-methods project aims to present quantitative data related to safety, student discipline, referrals/arrests, and support personnel in Providence Public Schools, to include the voices of Providence students and other stakeholders with data gathered from surveys and interviews/focus groups, and to place Providence in a broader national context via relevant research on topics such as the impact and effectiveness of police in schools, school to prison pipeline, impact of in-school support staff/resources, and alternatives to policing implemented in other districts. CYCLE is collaborating with PASS Coalition staff and youth leaders to ensure that design, data collection, analysis, and the final product are aligned with and supporting of campaign goals. If youth leaders are interested in taking part in the process on a more intensive level, CYCLE will work with PSU/PASS Coalition staff to determine their roles and support knowledge and skill development so that they can meaningfully participate in this project.
